Hey Alvin! I think Luang Namtha and Nong Khiaw are nice for getting more of a real Laos vibe. They will be boring for partying backpackers but I thought they were great. Muang Sing is tiny and I only visited briefly – I think this could generally be seen as dull or worthy of a 1-night stay at most. It’s the drive that’s more scenic rather than the town.

I didn’t pay much attention to the roads when I went between these other places by bus, so no idea how it is on scooter sorry.

There are several agencies in each town offering treks and tours. Since you have 4 days only maybe you can phone or email them ahead of time to be assured of the tour you want. Normally I just recommend winging it but since you have limited time, you might check ahead.

i am a 29 year old male travelling to laos for the first time.

i have done my research and my itinerary will include luang prabang (based there) and then exploring luang namtha, nong kiaow, muang sing and the other areas for around 4 days. (1st week of jan 2020)

hope you are able to address some of my questions:

1.
i know its not as bustling as luang prabang old town but i am really hoping to get a glimpse of the real life in the villages. i heard a mix review, either pretty amazing or pretty boring. could i know your thoughts on the area?
2.
do you think i am able to get a scooter and cover those places and if it is safe?
3.
should i book a private guide online or just “wing-it” and find a guide when i am there?

your thoughts and views are kindly appreciated.

Great post from Laos, like always 🙂
Muang Sing is a must see once you have arrived Luang Namtha, going there by your own bike and enjoy its amazing scenery is the best choice, no doubt.
Just to add that Nam Ha park, that where you went off for a waterfall walk, host some unique species of muntjac, but also tigers and elephants live around there, we were some soldiers placed on the checkpoint, I guess you passed it by. We had a strong storm and had to stop there for a while.
Finally, I would suggest an overnight in Muang Sing, yes, it’s a dusty town but you can find around many ethnic minorities villages, be aware of how the Chinese companies are modifying the landscapes with their banana plantations and also it will make your trip less tiring than a go-return in the same day.
Enjoy!

Know any schools in Bangkok? 🙂
