Thanks for sharing that info! Wifi was almost nonexistent when I went to Cuba around 2014 (only found it in a fancy hotel at like $10/hour). Seems things have improved but maybe not quite so much to easily support digital nomads yet 🙂

I wrote that article on WiFi in Cuba so thanks for reading it. Working remotely in Cuba is definitely possible but it’s very hard. WiFi has improved dramatically in recent years but it’s nowhere near ideal. It’s still fairly unreliable and inconsistent.

Yeah that does sound insanely expensive. Maybe you can try with the locals through the casas, either to buy or rent. A quick google search also reveals some cheaper rental places in Havana – this one for instance gets as low as 12 CUC a day with negotiable prices for longer rentals: https://bikerentalhavana.com/bike-rental/

Really nice guide with plentiful of useful information, thanks for sharing.

On another note, I was wondering if you knew a little bit about bicycle rental? Online, for reservation, the prices are up the roof naturally (30 CUC/day average). I’m looking to rent for a whole 10 days. Sooo…for 300 CUC I might as well buy a bike right? Or maybe the locals from the casa particulares can help me find a better deal? What do you think?

Cheers,

From what I’ve heard, the internet is still pretty crappy but improving a little bit. It’s not ideal as a remote working / digital nomad destination, though it depends on what you need to do and maybe you can get by. This is a good recent guide: https://www.escapingny.com/home/wifi-internet-in-cuba

Sure, there are hotels for 100+ USD per night, but I like your suggestion to book a casa particular. With our 2 kids it was normally ok to stay in a room with 2 or 3 beds, for about 30 CUC per night. A normal room in casa particular comes with its own bathroom, air conditioning and fridge.

Visas are never the airline’s responsibility so you have to check the requirements for your nationality. I’m Dutch and travelled with a UK friend to Cuba and could just get visas on arrival at the time.

Full of very useful tips for planning the rest of my trip so thank you! I have one question, I’m planning to spend a few weeks in Cuba, I’ll fly in either from Panama or Cancun, I’ve heard different things about whether the airline will arrange the visa for me or if I’ll need to do it myself in advance. I’m British FYI. Do you have any advice?

I would like to help any traveler who comes to know my country. I had the opportunity to manage and attend a private house in Trinidad for 3 months. It was great to meet and talk with people from other cultures and customs. It almost always saddens me to say goodbye to my guests … I feel the desire to help those who have few resources to travel to Cuba. Maybe I can help them make money here while they are traveling, or helping them to sell second-hand goods that they bring, or I can look for food, transportation and lodging for free or very cheap. If you do not speak Spanish, we can talk in English. Look for me on facebook.
