What I was trying to imply with the eye-roll was that they told me they hadn’t ever had any issues in the city and so they were kind of laughing off my question. But of course my sample size is only the specific Colombians I met. And perhaps it was also an issue of pride or not wanting their city to be associated with crime whenever I brought it up.

Great tips and my sense is that most of the crime issues in Medellin relate to nightlife or dating and can be avoided.

They rolled their eyes because they’d ALL probably been robbed at some point. Everyone I know has been robbed. All of my neighbors have been robbed. I’ve been robbed, twice. I think literally every woman in the city has had a cellphone or purse stolen. If you live here, you’re going to get robbed. I view it as a type of tax I have to pay every so often, haha. However, a tourist visiting for a week or two probably will not need to worry as long as they take a few basic precautions: don’t go out alone, don’t get drunk in public, don’t invite a person you don’t know well into your hotel room or Airbnb, etc.
